Chapter 5 Waste Management
This chapter addresses emissions from various processes that generate liquid and solid waste associated with human activities. These emissions do not typically occur at the point of origin but are commonly assessed at waste management facilities, such as landfills, wastewater treatment facilities, and composting operations, during the process of waste treatment and disposal. The methodologies summarized in this chapter include anaerobic pathways of methane generation (included within the total organic gases). While fuel combustion emissions at these facilities used for providing operational power are accounted for in Chapter 7, this chapter covers on-site combustion and the release of biologically produced landfill gas, biogas, etc.
